Canada Gander's Lament

My family raised ducks and geese on a pond. One summer a goose and her goslings were killed on the highway as they were crossing to another body of water across the road. The gander waited until a November snow fall and then finally took off for the south....true story. Canada Geese mate for life.

The only love of mine
You know we must spread our wings
And leave for warm sunshine
For now snowstorms gather
I rest my head under a wing

And our revels of the spring

Our young ones grew through summer
Strong as you showed them our ways
Running through the marshy grass
Paddling in the bay
But snow is on November fields
And still you do not come
I fear the worst but still I wait
For this family can be my only one
